“The more I like me, the less I want to pretend to be other people.” Born into a family of actors in Santa Monica, California in 1958, few were surprised when Jamie Lee Curtis gave up on a future in social work and dropped out of college in exchange for the silver screen. Instantly proving her talents, she made her film debut in the 1978 horror film Halloween which, as luck would have it, became the highest grossing independent film of its time. Afterward, Curtis starred in a string of horror films and was fondly dubbed Hollywood’s hottest “Scream Queen.”Advertisements:

Spending the early 1980s starring in horror flicks like The Fog and Prom Night, Curtis was desperate to move beyond her horror queen image and did exactly that in 1983 with Trading Places. By the end of the decade, she showcased her wide range and on-screen versatility with cult hits like A Fish Called Wanda and Blue Steel before welcoming the 1990s with a Golden Globe-winning performance in True Lies. Since then, she’s continued to evolve as an actress with an obvious affinity for more family-friendly films in her later career thanks to her success in hits like Freaky Friday and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Along the way, she’s even proven her talent as an author with nearly a dozen children’s books published since 1993.

Known for her incredible honesty both on and off the set, Curtis was well into her 40s when she joined a long list of celebrities who have gone under the knife to fight the signs of aging. Although she’s now 58 years old, the Scream Queens star admitted several years ago that her youthful glow and slim figure wasn’t exactly the result of good genes. “I don’t have great thighs…and [I have] a soft, fatty little tummy. And I’ve got back fat,” she said. “I don’t want the unsuspecting 40-year-old women of the world to think that I’ve got it going on. It’s such a fraud and I’m the one perpetuating it.”

So, what has Curtis had nipped, tucked, tightened and tweaked? When she first confessed, she was tight-lipped about the procedure and only said, “I’ve had a little plastic surgery” before adding, “I’ve had a little lipo. I’ve had a little Botox and, you know what? None of it works. None of it.” Soon after, she had a change of heart and revealed more about her time under the knife. “I want to do my part,” she said, “as I develop the consciousness for it, to stop perpetuating the myth. I’m going to look the way God intends me to look.”

Although many celebrities of her generation have opted for plastic surgery to revitalize their careers and rekindle their popularity, others have regretted it, including Curtis who was shocked by what each procedure involved as well as the recovery time. “Nobody tells you if you take fat from your body in one place, it comes back in another place,” she said. She even admitted that she thought she “looked worse” afterward but, unfortunately, her appearance quickly became the least of her worries.

The worst part of cosmetic surgery for Curtis was the painkillers she was prescribed afterward. In addition to her ongoing battle with alcoholism, she developed an addiction to prescription drugs and spent years fighting the addiction before she finally achieved sobriety in 1999. With her life and career finally back on track, Curtis had the courage to come forward about her experience with plastic surgery. “I’m trying hard to take the veil off the fraud, to be real, to start with me,” she said. “Now I’m sitting here on my high hill, debunking the very foundation that I sit on.”

Admitting that her sobriety is the greatest achievement of her life, Curtis has since sworn off plastic surgery and has promised to maintain a natural look. Of course, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from working overtime after the 58-year-old appeared on the red carpet looking younger than ever. Amid rumors that she’s gone under the knife yet again, Curtis says she hasn’t broken her promise. “Aging is human evolution in its pure form,” she said. “Genetics are the key to aging. I now resemble both my grandmothers, where when I was younger I didn’t see them at all.”

After nearly four decades in the spotlight, Curtis may resemble her grandmothers but that doesn’t bother her a bit as she carries on the family legacy her mother, Psycho star Janet Leigh, and her father, Tony Curtis of Some Like It Hot, left behind so many years ago. Despite her regrets surrounding her time under the knife, the 58-year-old actress and author has turned a negative into a positive by achieving sobriety and rekindling her career with appearances in films like Veronica Mars and Spare Parts as well as in television series like New Girl. As if that hasn’t kept her busy enough, she’s also the star of Fox’s comedy horror series Scream Queens where she certainly lives up to her nickname.
