“I don’t want my wrinkles taken away—I don’t want to look like everyone else.” One of the greatest actresses of all time, Jane Fonda got her start on Broadway in 1960 where her performance in There Was a Little Girl earned the young star two Tony Award nominations. The same year, she made her film debut in Tall Story and continued to blossom as an actress with hits like Period of Adjustment, Barefoot in the Park and Barbarella. Refusing to stop there, she also found time to release 22 workout videos in the midst of earning an Emmy Award and four Golden Globes as well as seven Academy Award nominations with wins for her 1972 performance in Klute and again in 1979 for Coming Home.Advertisements:

Beyond her incredible success on the silver screen, Fonda is also known for her 10-year marriage to billionaire Ted Turner from 1991 to 2001 as well as her grand return to acting in the 2005 comedy Monster in Law after a 14-year hiatus. Since then, she’s starred in Georgia Rule, The Butler and Youth with her most recent work on Netflix’s original series, Grace and Frankie, starring Lily Tomlin and Martin Sheen.

With her character on Grace and Frankie resembling much of Fonda herself, the 78-year-old actress, writer and activist has set herself apart in Hollywood as one of the few celebrities who doesn’t shy away from talking about her plastic surgery. With people frequently asking her how she looks so young despite her 80th birthday just around the corner, Fonda doesn’t give it a second thought. “People always say, ‘Oh my god, how do you stay looking so blah blah blah.’ I’ve had plastic surgery. I’ve talked about that. That doesn’t matter.”

In 2011, Fonda use social media to share with her fans that she opted for a cosmetic procedure to remove the bags under her eyes in addition to smoothing out her jawline. “I decided it would be good to get a new haircut so people will think it’s my new hair that’s different,” she said. Fonda also managed to sneak in a little more work on her neck and revealed that this trip under the knife was far from her first rodeo after getting plastic surgery for much of her career.

About 11 years earlier, Fonda’s tune was much different when she said that she was finally at a point in her life and career where she vowed not to have another procedure done. However, she eventually caved. “If I was really brave, I would have not,” she said. “I vowed I wouldn’t—I did, and I don’t feel proud of it.” While she felt guilty about it, she didn’t go to any extremes and still left a few signs of aging to ensure her iconic beauty carried on into her later years.

“I like my crow’s feet and I like my little laugh lines,” she said. “It was just the little jowls away, that’s all. I didn’t want to lie about it. I’m writing a book about getting older, so I had to admit it. I feel so good. I’m so happy.” Although Fonda says she has many regrets, she can’t deny that maintaining her look with plastic surgery has tremendously helped even though it was fairly uncommon in Hollywood in the 1970s and 1980s.

As someone who enjoys watching older movies, Fonda says there is a huge difference among old and new Hollywood. “People looked older back then,” she said. “I wish I were brave enough to not do plastic surgery, but I think I bought myself a decade.” Of course, her time on the operating table doesn’t come without a warning as the On Golden Pond star says, “The danger with surgery is you say, ‘Oh this is good, let me do more.’ It can be an addiction.”

Unlike so many others, Fonda has also tapped into the underlying need to get plastic surgery in the first place, which she ties to a history of sexual abuse. “Thirty percent of women were sexually abused when they were young. And a woman who has been sexually abused will have a tendency to go too far…when you’re older it can be plastic surgery. When I see a woman who’s made her face a mask, I say, ‘I bet, I bet.’”

Obviously a real eye opener for Fonda as well as her fans when she made this connection, Fonda is still pretty conflicted about her own plastic surgery addiction as it has not only extended her career in Hollywood, it’s also masked some of the problems of her youth. Regardless, we can’t help but be a little selfish and grateful that the 78-year-old has done so much to ensure her staying power in Hollywood after all these years. Goodness knows, Tinsel Town wouldn’t be the same without the iconic, beautiful and talented Jayne Semour Fonda.
